I had a very disappointing experience working with John Messina and would not recommend Van Riper & Messina CPAs based on my experience. I was referred to John due to the complexity of my 2021 tax return, but my return was ultimately prepared by another member of the team. An error on the return later resulted in an IRS audit and over $1,500 in penalties and interest, which I paid in full. Following this, I had significant difficulty getting timely responses or assistance despite multiple follow-ups. Overall, this experience caused me to lose confidence in the firm’s attention to detail and client communication. Based on my experience, I would recommend carefully considering other CPA options in the San Diego area.
