The lawyer could have explained that option but chose not to. the initial filing process became far more complicated and expensive than necessary. Years later, I’m handling much of the process on my own, including filling the paperwork to finalize the divorce. Clients deserve honest guidance about all available options, including self-help. A lawyer should not withhold a simpler, lower-cost option merely to generate additional fees for filing paperwork.
